Wings All-Time Leading Scorer Tom "Hollywood" Marechek To Retire From Indoor Lacrosse
Tuesday, April 5, 2005
Philadelphia Wings all-time leading scorer Tom “Hollywood” Marechek, a 12-year
veteran of the indoor lacrosse team, all with the Wings, will retire from indoor
lacrosse at the end of the 2005 season. The team will honor Marechek’s last
regular season home game at the Wachovia Center on Saturday, April 9, with “Say
Goodbye to Hollywood” Night.
“Tommy has been a franchise player for the Wings and a
top performer in the NLL his whole career,” said Wings Owner and President Russ
Cline. “Equally important, he has been a team player and an integral part of our
World Championships and has had a huge impact on the growth of indoor lacrosse.
Tommy is a quality person who will be deeply missed but never forgotten. He will
always be a member of the Wings family.”
In honor of Marechek’s retirement, the team will host a “Say Goodbye to
Hollywood” night, featuring a pre-game retirement ceremony and tributes from the
lacrosse world throughout the game.
The first 5,000 fans will also receive commemorative Tom Marechek
t-shirts courtesy of Powerade and Supercuts.
Marechek, nicknamed “Hollywood” for his flashy style of indoor lacrosse,
retires as the Wings all-time points leader (751 points), all-time leading goal
scorer (383), all-time assist leader (368), all-time penalty minutes leader
(178). The four-time member of the Wings World Championship Teams finishes as
the National Lacrosse League’s third all-time leading points leader and fourth
all-time in goals and assists. He
has been chosen to play in all three NLL All-Star Games held during his career
and has been elected to eight NLL All-Pro Teams. Marechek was named 1994 Rookie
of the Year after being acquired by the Wings from the Buffalo Bandits prior to
the start of the season.
The Baltimore, MD resident has commuted to Philadelphia to play lacrosse
throughout his twelve-year career to accommodate his full-time job as a school
teacher and coach. Marechek
graduated from Syracuse University in 1992 with a degree in political
science. While at Syracuse, the
Kitchener, Ontario native was a member of two NCAA Championship teams and was a
first team All-American for three straight years (1990-92).
