Philadelphia Tramples Over Titans
Monday, April 9, 2007
PHILADELPHIA- The Wings came out firing and never
stopped as they defeated the expansion New York Titans, 20-8, Saturday at the
Wachovia Center in front of 13,201 fans. The Titans scored first, but gave
up the next six goals and never recovered. The team hasn't won on the road
this season. Athan Iannucci and Jake Bergey led the powerful Philadelphia
offense with six goals each. Sean Greenhalgh, Keith Cromwell, and Dan
Marohl combined for 18 assists.
"We had a lot of things going for us tonight and we were finishing real
strong on the net," said Wings' General Manager and Head Coach Lindsay
Sanderson. "It was a real good night for the boys. We have to get
ready and set up for next week. We'll focus on just having a good
practice. We'll have to play a full 60 minutes and have everybody
running and gunning."
The Titans took the lead on the first shot of the game in the opening minute
of play. But the Wings took over, socring the next six goals. The
goals all came in pairs. Sean Greenhalgh and Athan Iannucci scored first
in a 24-second span. Iannucci put the ball past New York goalie Matt Vinc
again five minutes later on the power play and Jake Bergey added to the lead 54
seconds later. Finally, Iannucci completed the hat trick and Marc Morley
scored, both on the power play with the Titans' Keevin Galbraith in the box for
five minutes with a high-sticking penalty. Mike McLellan ended the quarter
with a goal for New York.
New York opened the scoring in the second quarter with a goal by former
Wings' defenseman Jeff Spano. The Wings answered with the only other two
goals of the quarter. Bergey and Greenhalgh each tallied their second of
the game. Philadelphia killed off a late Titans' power play to hold an 8-3
lead at halftime.
Iannucci netted his fourth goal of the game to start the second half.
Bobby Horsey responded for New York, but Philadelphia quickly scored two more,
from Keith Cromwell and Morley. Pat Maddalena capitalized on a power play
for the Titans to make it an 11-5 game. The Wings took over once again as
Dan Marohl added a goal to his five assists and Iannucci brought his goal total
to five. With a 13-5 score, New York replaced Vinc in goal with Nick
Schroeder. Schroeder gave up a goal to Bergey to end the quarter.
Philadelphia led, 14-5, going into the final quarter.
The Wings continued to dominate in the final quarter. Bergey
scored his fourth and fifth goals, while Geoff Snider added a goal to his
four assists. Goals by New York's Keevin Galbraith and Brendan Mundorf
couldn't help the team battle back. The Titans added a final goal by
Mundorf during a five-on-three power play. Philadelphia ended the action
with goals by Bergey, Iannucci, and Snider in a 35-second span.
