Wings Determine Playoff Fate In Final Two Regular Season Games
Thursday, April 12, 2007
After a convincing 20-8 win over
the New York Titans last Saturday, the Philadelphia Wings control their playoff
fate once again. With two regular
season games left to go this weekend, the Wings must either win both games or
win one and have the Titans defeat the Toronto Rock on Saturday night. The Wings face the Minnesota Swarm
tomorrow night at the Wachovia Center at 7:30 p.m., a game that was originally
scheduled for March 17 but postponed due to weather related travel issues. The Wings fly to Chicago Saturday
morning to face the Shamrox that night at Sears Centre at 7:30 p.m.
“It was nice to see our guys get
rewarded with a strong win last week,” said Wings GM and Head Coach Lindsay
Sanderson. “The ball went in the
net for us and it was probably the first time this year that things looked like
they were going our way. We created
a lot of good scoring opportunities and Jake (Bergey) and Athan (Iannucci) had
great nights scoring six goals each.”
The win over the Titans put the
Wings’ playoff fate back in their own hands. The Wings’ were previously scheduled to
play the Swarm in a home and home on March 17 and 18th. But when an ice storm in Philadelphia
caused the cancellation of the Minnesota’s flight on Friday and with many
unsuccessful attempts to rebook the day of the game, the game was postponed
until Friday, April 13th.
The Wings’ traveled to Minnesota the next day to play the second game in
the series as planned.
Unfortunately, the extra day off didn’t help as the Swarm defeated the
Wings 11-9.
“We started thinking about this
Minnesota game a couple of minutes after we beat New York,” said Sanderson. “We lost to them 11-9 up there and we
thought we were fairly solid. The
shot count and the loose balls were fairly even. We didn’t have (Geoff) Snider that
particular night because he was serving a one game suspension. Minnesota was missing (Scott) Stewart
and (Travis) Hill. There’s not a
lot of difference between the two teams so it’s going to come down to a break
here or there. I hope we can
recreate the opportunities that we had last week and hopefully that will be
enough to take care of business.”
Whatever the outcome of Friday’s
game, the Wings will quickly refocus to play a rested Chicago team on Saturday
night. Even with the back to back
games, Sanderson doesn’t expect there to be much shuffling in the lineup.
“At this time of the year I’m
pretty happy with what I’ve been going with every night. We’ve got some young legs there, so it
should be a bit of an advantage for Chicago. We’ve also got a lot of young legs in
our lineup so I expect our guys to rise to the occasion.”
Notes: Minnesota defensemen Riley Kemp and Mark
Miyashita will both miss Friday night’s game due to season-ending injuries. Mike Hominuck is day-to-day with a
sprained ankle … Saturday night’s game will be broadcast on Comcast-Sportsnet
Philadelphia on Sunday, April 15 at 3:30 p.m.
