Wings Draft 2007 - Drew Westervelt
Thursday, October 4, 2007
With their 3rd selection in
the 2007 NLL Entry Draft the Philadelphia Wings selected UMBC attackman Drew
Westervelt. At UMBC Westervelt
started off his career by putting up the fourth highest rookie scoring total in
the team’s 24 year NCAA Division I history. He was named to the America East
Conference All Rookie Team. In 2005
Westervelt was named Second Team All Conference while leading his team in points
in conference play. 2006 marked the
second consecutive season Drew was named to the All America East Second
Team. Westervelt finished his career strong, as he became only the fourth
player in UMBC history to record more than 70 points in a season while being
named a Third Team All American.
Westervelt finished his career as a UMBC
Retriever third on the school’s All-Time Scoring list with 206 points (112g,
94a) and first in total number of games played with
59.
Drew’s Head Coach at UMBC, Don Zimmerman, believes
that he will be able to contribute to the Wings with his skill and great
attitude. " [He] has proven himself
to be both a versatile lacrosse player as well as a hard working, tough
competitor. Everyone associated with UMBC is extremely proud of Drew as both an
outstanding player and a first-class individual."
Westervelt’s
limited box experience is not a concern for Wings Head Coach Dave Huntley, “His
rookie season in the MLL and brilliant career at UMBC suggest that he is a quick
study.”
Drew's
comments about being drafted confirm Coach Huntley's feelings about the
Wing's draft pick and his work ethic. "I am extremely excited to be
drafted by the Wings and to get training camp started so I can learn as much as
possible."
Drew Westervelt is a
complete, a point illustrated best by Huntley when asked to pick what single
aspect of Westervelt’s game excited him the most. “He has so many positive traits; size, athleticism,
great passer, big shot and most importantly selflessness, I can’t pick just
one. It is the combination of all
these traits that excite us about him.”
