Wings Face First Back to Back Games of Season
Wednesday, February 27, 2008
Every week is a different test for the undefeated Philadelphia
Wings and this one is no different.
The Wings have their first back-to-back games this weekend hosting a hot
New York team at home on Friday night and heading to Buffalo to face the Bandits
at HSBC Arena on Saturday.
After a win over the then-undefeated Colorado Mammoth on
February 15 and the 6-1 Minnesota Swarm last Friday, Wings Head Coach Dave
Huntley can’t afford to let his team take the 4-4 Titans lightly. New York has won their last three and is
coming off of a big victory over the Rochester Knighthawks last
Saturday.
“There’s a huge difference between where New York was last
year as an expansion franchise and where they are now,” said Huntley. “They’re playing extremely well -
scoring a lot of goals and not giving up a lot of goals.”
Current New York Head Coach and former Philadelphia Wings Head
Coach Adam Mueller knows that a win on Friday could provide his second year team
with an incredible boost, but understands the task at hand.
“They’re pretty scary,” said Mueller. “They’re talented and they can score in
bunches, which you really want to control as a team. They have an athletic and aggressive
defense and their offense can score off the face-off, five on five and on the
power play. They’re confidence is
really high right now and it’ll be a great test for our club.”
After Friday’s game, the Wings will head to Buffalo on
Saturday morning to play the Bandits at HSBC Arena that night.
“Every week is a different challenge. After the New York game on Friday night,
we have a short turn-around before we have to play Buffalo on Saturday,” said
Huntley. “We know we’re playing a
team that we were fortunate to come back and tie and eventually win in overtime
when we played them in Philadelphia in January and we’ll be in their building
which is a very tough place to play.”
Buffalo has virtually had a different line-up in every game
this season due to injuries which Huntley sees as a benefit to the
Bandits.
“The more guys you can play the better your depth gets. When
younger guys like (Daniel) Sams getting a chance to play, it just makes your
team better and stronger. All the
adversity they’ve faced will make this tough team even mentally
stronger.
The Wings are also facing the league’s second (New York) and
third (Buffalo) leading power play teams this weekend.
“I think we’ve got a pretty good penalty kill,” commented
Huntley. “Hopefully we won’t take
as many penalties as we’ve been taking.”
