Angels Spotlight - Dominique
Thursday, April 17, 2008
Dominique currently is a junior at
the University of the Arts in Center City, Philadelphia where she is majoring in
ballet. She also works at a health club in Philadelphia and teaches ballet at
the Step by Step Dance Center in Northeast Philadelphia to students six to 12
years old.
She began dancing at the age of three when her
parents enrolled her for classes at a local studio. Dominique has developed many
strong friendships through dance, which helps to keep her motivated to keep
dancing. She also has a large interest in the technical and structural aspects
of dance.
Dominique became interested in dancing with the
Angels because many of the girls she went to high school with became Angels
before her. Current Angels Geri and Kaitlyn, as well as former Angel Ashley
attended the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts with
Dominique.
In order to prepare for game time performances,
Dominique likes to “triple check” her dance bag for all of her uniform pieces.
Also, she before any performance she only places her dance shoes on the floor,
never on a chair or table.
During her two years performing as an Angel,
the moment that stands out in her mind the most was this year on a radio show;
she was announced as the cover girl for the Angels’ 2008 calendar. She also did
not share the news with her parents and they found out at the calendar unveiling
in January. Her parents were very surprised and happy for her.
Dominique’s favorite type of music to dance to is
classical due to her love for ballet. She feels that classical music “really
allows the audience to focus on the movements the dancer is making.” While she
is teaching, she enjoys dancing to songs my Miley Cyrus with her students.
In the future, Dominique would like to become a
professional dancer within an established dance company and go on tour.
Eventually she would love to open her own studio in order to continue to share
her love of dance with others.
Her advice to aspiring dancers:
“It’s never too late to start dancing. Some of the
best dancers I know did not start training until they were in high
school.”
