Wings on Short End of Defensive Battle with Visiting New York

In front of 17,340 fans, the largest crowd since
2002, at the Wachovia Center on Saturday, the Wings defeated 11-8 out for the
first time at home in the 2008 season, by the New York Titans. The Titans out
shot the Wings 54-43.
"It was a terrific effort by both teams. We had a
good defensive battle, but the Titans were able to convert on more
opportunities," commented Head Coach Dave Huntley.
Casey Powell put the Titans on the board first with a
goal at 4:03, and the Wings went scoreless until 5:09 when Jake Bergey posted a
goal, assisted by Merrick Thomson and A.J. Shannon. The teams traded goals until
the Titans had back-to-back scores to end the quarter, taking a 4-2
lead.
In the second quarter, the Titans started the scoring
with a goal by Mike McLellan, his second of the game. Athan Iannucci scored the
only goal for the Wings in the quarter, as the Titans took a 5-3 lead into
halftime.
Iannucci got the Wings offensive by scoring in the
third quarter quickly with a goal in the first 23 seconds. The Wings goal was
quickly answered with three goals from the Titans; two from Maddalena and one
from Brendan Mundorf. Geoff Snider’s score at 9:00 cut the deficit to 8-5
heading into the fourth quarter.
In an attempt to close the Titan’s lead, the Wings
scored back-to-back goals from Shawn Nadelen and Iannucci, his fourth of the
night, for a total of 67 goals this season. The Wings were unable to catch the
Titans as they tallied three more goals resulting in a final score of
11-8.
Leading the Wings were Iannucci with five points (4G,
1A), A.J. Shannon with three points (1G, 2A) and Nadelen with two points (1G,
1A). Goaltender Brandon Miller made 43 saves.
The Titans were led by Maddalena with ten points (4G,
6A), Mundorf with seven points (2G, 5A) and McLellan with three goals.
Goaltender Matt Vinc had 36 saves.
