Wings Lose in Final Seconds Versus Swarm
Saturday, March 14, 2009
The Wings Athan Iannucci, the league's 2008 MVP, returned
to his goal scoring dominance with his largest output (5G, 2A) since suffering a
major knee injury. But it was not enough as the Wings (4-7) were stung by
the Minnesota Swarm, who scored the game winner with five seconds left in the
game to take the victory 13-12.
“After last time we knew this
would be a tough physical game and that is what we got,” said Head Coach Dave
Huntley.
The Wings offense was non existent in the first quarter during
which they were outscored four goals to zero. Head Coach Dave Huntley was forced to
pull starting goaltender Brandon Miller in favor of Rob Blasdell. Philadelphia was able to gain ground in the
second quarter behind two goals from Iannucci and an assist. The halftime score was
6-4.
Iannucci continued to add offense in the second half with a goal and
an assist in the third quarter.
Both teams netted three and Minnesota maintained their two goal lead. The Wings came out on fire, in the
fourth quarter and it all started with a goal by Iannucci at 2:40 of the final
period of play. Rob Van Beek and
Merrick Thomson would add goals and the Wings had their first lead at 10-9. Minnesota stormed back to tie the game
and with five seconds remaining scored on a diving behind the net shot by Chad
Culp to give them the 13-12 win.
