Wings Rock Toronto in Final Regular Season Home Game
Saturday, April 11, 2009
– In a
game of streaks it was Wings game MVP Drew Westervelt who scored the go ahead
goal with one minute left to propel his team to victory. Philadelphia would add an empty net goal for a
final score of 16-14. With the win,
the Wings currently sit in fourth place and will play Rochester next Saturday with the winner to
secure the final East Division playoff spot.
“We had a couple of lapses
again tonight but our guys kept fighting back and we got a big win,” said Head
Coach Dave Huntley.
The Wings jumped on Toronto early scoring just 40 seconds into the
contest. Athan Iannucci had a first
quarter hat trick for Philadelphia and Westervelt scored his first
two of the night. The Wings took a
four goal advantage into the second quarter.
Toronto went on its first run of the game to start the second
quarter and scored five straight goals.
Merrick Thomson, Westervelt, and Geoff Snider answered to finish the
first half and to give the Wings their lead back going into the locker room at
9-7.
The Rock went on another five goal run
to start the second half and to take control of the game. All five of their goals in the third
quarter came within the first five minutes of play. Once again it was Snider, Westervelt,
and Thomson who picked Philadelphia back up and it was even at 12
entering the final period of play.
Mat Giles gave the Wings an early lead
in the fourth quarter, but Toronto answered back with two goals. John Harasym of Philadelphia tied the game
with five and half minutes to go and then it was Westervelt once again who
scored a huge goal for the Wings, which proved to be the game winner.
