Wings Fall in Season Opener to Titans
Friday, January 8, 2010
–
The Wings (0-1) were unable to overcome a seven goal first half rally by the
Orlando Titans (1-0) as the Wings were defeated 13-8 at the Amway Arena.
Orlando star forward Casey Powell led all goal scorers with four tallies and
teammate Jordan Hall registered six assists to lead all point getters on the
night. Philadelphia’s Drew Westervelt led the team
with three goals and offseason pickup Dan Teat was tops on the team with four
total points (2G, 2A).
The Wings struck first on the power play, when Teat beat
Titans goalie Mat Vinc 4:49 into the first quarter. Orlando responded three
minutes later on a goal from Bill Greer. Drew Westervelt went on to score
two straight to give Philadelphia a one goal edge before the Titans
offense awoke.
Orlando, led by Powell, tallied the final two goals of the
first quarter and the first five of the second to give them a lead they would
not relinquish. While the Titans offense kicked into high gear, their
goaltender was also at his best. Vinc stopped 16 of Philadelphia’s 17 shots in
the second quarter to allow his team to carry a five goal lead into
halftime.
Each team scored five goals in the second half, but
it was not offensive production that highlighted the latter part of the
contest. There were over 60 minutes of penalties, including three fights,
and multiple ejections in the final two quarters of play. Ultimately,
Orlando was able
to hold on to their lead and secure the first victory in their new home
arena.
