Wings Prepare for Second Meeting with Blazers
Wednesday, January 27, 2010
Following a trade earlier this week where the Boston Blazers
(1-3) sent 2009 NCAA Lacrosse Player of the Year, Max Seibald to the
Philadelphia Wings (1-2), the two teams will play in Boston on Saturday, January
30 at 1 p.m. The Wings will be in search of their second win against the Boston
Blazers (1-3) during the 2010 season. Wings Goalie Brandon Miller led the Wings
in the first meeting by stopping 41 or 49 shots.
Series Notes:
Overall: Boston leads 3-1
At Philadelphia: Boston leads 2-1
At Boston: Boston leads 1-0
Last Meeting: January 16, 2010,
Philadelphia won at home (12-8)
About the Boston Blazers:
Boston started this young rivalry out strong by taking the first
three games in 2009. Philadelphia got in the win column for the series during
the first home game at the Wachovia Center for the Wings on January, 16 2010.
The 12-8 win was a complete team effort on both sides of the ball for the Wings
which included holding 2009 NLL MVP Dan Dawson to only two points
(2A).
Dawson is second on the team with 14 points (4G, 10A) behind
Daryl Veltman who has 16 points (6G, 10A) and was the NLL’s overall first pick
in the 2008 Entry Draft. Philadelphia missed Anthony Cosmo, the Blazers top
goalie, as they were playing the last game of a back to back weekend when the
two teams first met. Cosmo is third in the league with a goals against average
of 10.24.
About the Hometown Wings:
Brandon Miller was the star of the first game in Philadelphia
right from the beginning faceoff when he stopped 14 of 15 shots in the first
quarter. After a sluggish second quarter that saw 6 goals scored by Boston,
Miller show why he was the leagues defensive player of the week stopping an
amazing 18 of 19 shots in the second half to lead the Wings to the victory.
The Wings early scoring leaders on the season are Drew
Westervelt with 13 points (7G, 6A), Matt Giles with 12 points (5G, 7A) and Kyle
Wailes with 9 points (3G, 6A). Miller is fourth in the NLL with a .784 a save
percentage.
The Wings will return home on Saturday, February 6 at 7 p.m.
when they face their heated rival, the Orlando Titans.
Coaches Corner:
Wings General Manager and Head Coach David
Huntley:
"We are obviously excited to have Max join us. I think he had a
great college career and a very good summer for Denver, and was one of the key
guys getting them to a championship game in the MLL” said Wings General Manager
and Head Coach David Huntley. “He has some pro experience and now needs to learn
the indoor game. I think he will do well with that and we are delighted we made
the trade with Boston and as to when he's going to be in the lineup I think
that's going to be up to Max and me so we will just see how he develops but we
don't have a date."
"I think obviously we were fortunate catching them the
week before because its always tough to play back to back and even tougher to
play back to back when your shorthanded for the bulk of the Toronto game” said
Wings General Manager and Head Coach David Huntley. “That was bad luck for them,
but I was happy our guys because we did what we needed to do to get a win and
hopefully we will take the things we did well in that game. We didn't do
everything well, there are some things we need to improve on week to week and
hopefully that translates into a good outcome for us on Saturday."
"I thought Geoff played very well for us in doing a lot of
different things in the first game and the third game” said Wings General
Manager and Head Coach David Huntley. “When we played Boston, Geoff made some
good adjustments in his play in the second half and he did some other things
other than being a good faceoff guy for us. Its a project he started
working on literally two years ago and he's continued to that and I've been
really pleased and happy with how he's handled that."
Boston Head Coach Tom Ryan:
"We obviously selected Max because we thought he was going to be
good player that would fit with our style of play but it didn't work out that
way” said Boston Head Coach Tom Ryan. “We are happy with the young guys we have
that have played well for us so we really are focused on the guys we have that
want to be on our team and getting our guys to play the best they
can."
"When we started the season, we thought with Toronto being a
new team that it would a good way to open our season but they have really come a
long ways since they've come to the league” said Boston Head Coach Tom Ryan. “It
was good to see the guys respond when you go 0-3 to help each other and not
point fingers. Give the guys a lot of credit, they buckled down and worked
much harder and put together a good game on Saturday night."
"I think last year we had a little bit of a slow start going 0-2
but we were able to pull it together and we had a good February” said Boston
Head Coach Tom Ryan. “As for this year, we still have a very young team
and although we had a lot of success last year, there always is a lot to learn
playing in this league. You have to put the work in and you have to earn
your wins. Hopefully one of the things we learned earlier this season is
that you can't just expect to show up and win, because when you do, bad things
happen. Hopefully we are back on track and ready to work for our
wins."
