Wings Topped by Blazers in Boston
Saturday, January 30, 2010
BOSTON, MA – The Wings (1-3) went down 1-0 in the first minute of play and
would never see a lead in their afternoon contest with the Boston Blazers (2-3).
Despite there not being an overwhelming number of shots, premium scoring chances
were not limited. Both goaltenders made a number of outstanding saves to keep
the score close throughout, but it was the Blazers’ Anthony Cosmo who ended up
with the final advantage over the Wings’ Brandon Miller. Philadelphia will
travel to Toronto to face the Rock this Friday night before returning home to
face the Orlando Titans at the Wachovia Center on Saturday, February 6 at 7 p.m.
An early miscue in net by Miller gave Boston a lead only 49 seconds into
the contest. The Blazers controlled much of the first quarter, keeping
Philadelphia to only one goal. An early powerplay goal in the second quarter by
Wings forward Mat Giles was answered with three tallies from Boston, two coming
from 2009 NLL MVP Dan Dawson, which allowed the Blazers to keep the momentum.
Philadelphia’s fortunes appeared to change in the final five minutes of the half
when Boston accidentally put a ball in its own net. Then with only one second
remaining Philadelphia’s Kevin Huntley scored his first career goal on a
powerplay to bring his team within two goals as they went into the locker room.
Huntley did not wait long to record his second of the season, as he
brought the Wings within one goal just 22 seconds into the game’s second half,
but Philadelphia was unable to gain anymore ground on their division rival. The
second half was extremely physical and saw 30 total penalty minutes handed out
by the officials. Miller and Cosmo continued to stand on their heads, turning
away quality shots at both ends of the floor to keep the game tight down the
stretch. The ultimate difference maker was Boston’s Daryl Veltman who scored his
team’s final three goals including the game icing score which came with 53
seconds left in the final quarter.
