Well this is when the Blog business get’s tough. Once
again we lost a game we could have won. Except for the 1st period, (I know there
are 4 quarters in a game) the scoring was 8 to 8. Our man down team
spectacularly shut them out (0-7) and our power play could have won it for us
but only went 2 for 8. Too many penalties, very close misses and undisciplined
play in spots led to a very disappointing loss. Great goalie play and defense by
both teams in the 2nd half. We really could be 3-1 and should be no less than
2-2 but reality is we are 1-3. Offensively this team is not far off but our lack
of transition scoring and scoring inside has kept us from a breakout game. I say
let’s do it this weekend.
A few observations:
- We have been plagued with injuries with the latest
Shawn Nadelen who is out for the season. With our two most prolific offensive
players, Iannucci and Thomson out, we have lost a lot of goals. Currently we do
not have a player in the top 19 scorers in the league.
- We are getting way too many penalties. We are 4th
in the league as a team with Geoff Snider leading the league in minor penalties
and 2nd in total minutes second to Rory Smith of the Titans. If we were not 3rd
overall in penalty kills we would not even be in some of the games.
- Our power play team still is 10th in the league
with a 30.4% scoring. Only Boston is worse.
- Only three goalies have had more saves than Miller
with 150 but he is still 9th overall in % of saves. (.773) We’re allowing too
many transition goals by opposing teams.
- Drew Westervelt has had the 3rd most shots of any
player in the league with 64. His 51 shots on goal are excellent. He’s working
hard but they are not falling. Watch for more of these shots to find the back of
the net.
- In the rookie department with his 2 goals Saturday
Kevin Huntley moved to #8 among all rookie scorers. He will go up. We’ll see two
of the best rookies in the league Friday night in Garrett Billings and Stephan
LeBlanc with Toronto. They are #1 and #2 in rookie scoring and 10th and
12th league wide.
- The Wings have 4 players with 5 goals or more.
(Drew/Matt lead the team with 8 each) This is consistent with other
teams. We are missing a player in the double digits which is rare for us
and is prominent on other teams.
It’s
going to be a challenging weekend to go to Toronto on Friday night and back home
against Orlando Saturday night. To illustrate my point Rock goalie Watson is
currently #1 and Titans goalie Vino is #3 in save percentage in the league. Our
opponents are ranked one and two in the Eastern Division. We get to see our
newest addition Max Seibald this weekend playing in both games. I am still
convinced we can beat anyone. This is going to be great lacrosse weekend.
Invite a friend and bring them to the fastest game on two feet. I look forward
to hearing “sucks” 17 times this Saturday.
