Rochester Powers Past Wings
Saturday, February 20, 2010
PHILADELPHIA, PA – Gary Gait
scored four goals and Shawn Williams chipped in with two goals and three assists
to lead the Rochester Knighthawks over the Philadelphia Wings, 12-6. The
Wings held a one goal lead going into the half, but could not find their
offensive rhythm in the final two quarters, scoring just once. Philadelphia will return home to the Wachovia Center on Saturday, March 13 when they
face the Minnesota Swarm.
Philadelphia tallied the game’s first three goals, but
were unable to sustain their offense. The teams exchanged goals throughout
the second quarter until Gary Gait notched a power play goal with just over four
minutes remaining in the opening half, cutting the Wings’ lead to
5-4.
Chris Schiller’s
power play goal early in the third quarter brought the Knighthawks even with the
Wings, and Shawn Williams’s power play goal nearly a minute and a half later
pushed Rochester
ahead with a 6-5 lead. John Christmas followed with a goal to bring the Wings to
within one, but the Knighthawks added two more goals in the frame to go ahead
for good.
Special teams
have been a weakness for Philadelphia all season, and that trend
continued Saturday night. The Wings converted on just one of seven power play
opportunities, and surrendered eight power play goals. Philadelphia entered the
contest ranked 10th in the league on the power play, and eighth in
the league on the penalty kill.
