Bill Parcels said “You are what your won/loss record
says you are.” What he didn’t explain was how you got there. Certainly our
record is beyond disappointing. My Dad taught me as a boy… “Son, no one really
wants to hear or cares about excuses.” So with that wisdom drilled into me from
childhood I will take his advice and not give any.
I just finished another long call with all of our
owners and coaching staff. It was certainly not the first communication
this week or season but one of many. Want to know how it went and our
conclusions?
- Everyone was as disappointed and angry as you but
all refused to be discouraged or give up.
- We looked back to determine next moves… not to
blame, lament or feel sorry for ourselves.
- Everyone was transparent and sought the best
solution for the team, not our individual agenda.
- We came to a consensus on needed changes in
players. Not to make anyone a “fall guy” but to get the talent on the field that
can best execute our game plan.
- We took decisive action to play faster and realize
to do that we will need to take our chances with a hungrier, younger line-up.
- We will change the front door personnel (first on
floor after offensive passion) to get speed and toughness.
- We want a fast, disciplined, in your face team that
is coachable.
- Changes begin today.
Some of you will say what took you so long and will
this guarantee us a winner? Response to the first question is reread my above
comments about “excuses”. To the second, as much as I would like to, I cannot
guarantee a different outcome. What I can guarantee is a different style of play
and product on the field that you will like and that will give us a better
chance to win. You have every right to be angry because you care and feel
helpless to do anything except yell “boo” to make your feelings known. I will
assure you we have some of the best lacrosse minds in the world on our staff and
while we certainly feel challenged we don’t feel helpless. By the way, we talked
about you on the call. We all agreed you deserve better and we want you to be
proud of us again. Just know we will do everything we can to get your confidence
back.

PS If this does not work, someone make me one of
those sacks you had so you don’t recognize me at the post game
party.
