Russ Cline (Business Journal Article)
Russ Cline Reflects on the Game Versus Calgary
Tuesday, March 9, 2010

A blog is a vehicle to express your thoughts and feelings.  No one expresses all their thoughts and feelings because most people don’t care, those who do care can be hurt by them or use them against you.  Saturday night was a tough night for me.  It was 2:00 am before I went to bed.  Sitting in the darkness of my living room I tried to understand why this game was so disturbing to me.  We’ve lost before…to be exact, six times. Wasn’t the worst loss in the league this year…Rock beat the Nighthawks’ 17-3.  Wasn’t even our worst loss…Rock beat us 19-11.  What was it?

-     I thought our team lost their composure in the second half and played without purpose, intensity or direction. It looked like the JV team playing the varsity.

-     It showed the difference between our franchise and a World Champion franchise. They were what I would like this team to be and it exposed how far we still have to go.

-     I really believed we had turned the corner after the Buffalo win. All we accomplished was making Calgary look good enough to go to #1 in the Power Ranking for the league. Notice almost every team that plays us gets a “player of the week award” in some category.

  Here are some facts:

-     Even without two of our most prolific scorers we are still scoring consistent (90-92 goals) with other teams in our division except Toronto (132).

-     We are dead last in defense giving up 114 goals.  Our closest is Buffalo with 104.  We are not nearly as good on defense as we expected to be.

-     Here’s one for you…we are the 2nd least penalized team in the league and #1 has played two less games.  Contrary to some opinions it’s not the penalty box that’s killing us.

-     Special teams are “hit and miss” and we are at or near the bottom in both.  With the 2nd worst man down team in the league every penalty is magnified.  We are ranked in the bottom 3 on the Power Play.

So what do I do?  I hope with everything that is in me that this team rallies together and doesn’t go backwards. I hope that we will find some players who really want to win and can play in this league.  I hope we win a couple of games this weekend.  Can’t kick a guy for hoping can you?
