PHILADELPHIA WINGS ADD FIVE PLAYERS TO ROSTER THROUGH 2013 NLL ENTRY DRAFT
WINGS DRAFT TRANSITION PLAYER AJ MASSON WITH THEIR FIRST SELECTION IN THE DRAFT (2ND ROUND, 12TH OVERALL)
The Philadelphia Wings built on both the offensive and defensive sides of the game in the 2013 National Lacrosse League entry draft Monday night by adding transition player AJ Masson, forwards James Delaney and Rob Pannell, defender Tucker Durkin, and goalie Don Alton.
With their first selection in the draft at number 12 overall, the Wings selected Masson out of the University of Vermont. This summer Masson scored 34 points (15 goals, 19 assists) for the Oakville Rock of the Major Series Lacrosse league. Played four seasons for the University of Vermont Catamounts where he was named a member of the 2013 NEILA senior scholar athlete team.
"Being a fan of the league [NLL] for so long it feels awesome to put this Philadelphia Wings hat on," said AJ Masson on his reaction to being drafted by the Wings.
The Wings owned back-to-back picks at 18 and 19 overall drafting James Delaney and Tucker Durkin.
Delaney was a midfielder at Seton Hill University in Greensburg, PA and plays the position of forward for the Nanaimo Timbermen of the Western Lacrosse Association in Canada. In 2013 Delaney was voted to the USILA All-America first team and Most Outstanding Midfielder. Delaney turned heads at the NLL Draft combine this past weekend where he had 11 points and moved up the depth charts.
"I am thankful for the opportunity that the NLL presents us with at the NLL combine this past weekend,” said 18th overall pick James Delaney.
Tucker Durkin, a local product from Huntingdon Valley, PA where he attended LaSalle College High School, was a defender at Johns Hopkins University. Durkin earned USILA All-America honors three times and was twice awarded the Nation’s Top Defenseman while at Johns Hopkins. He most recently played for the Hamilton Nationals of the MLL and will be reunited with teammates Brodie Merrill, Kevin Crowley, and Jordan Hall on the Wings.
“I am really excited to be playing in Philadelphia,” said Durkin. “I grew up going to Wings games with my family and I am looking forward to be able to play in front of my family and friends at the Wells Fargo Center.”
Rounding out the draft the Wings selected Don Alton at 33 overall and Rob Pannell with pick 50 overall.
Alton has spent the last two years with the Six Nations Arrows of the Ontario Lacrosse Association Junior A league. He posted a .791 save percentage and allowed just 5.81 goals per game in 2013.
Rob Pannell was a forward at Cornell University. Pannell earned USILA first team All-America honors three times and won the 2013 Tewaaraton Award for most outstanding American college lacrosse player. Last played for the New York Lizards of the MLL where he won Rookie of the Year honors for the 2013 season.
The Philadelphia Wings will open the 2014 NLL regular season on the road versus the Buffalo Bandits on Saturday, December 28.
